Work Life Balance -There Is No Such Thing!

For many people, 100% work and 100% life is impossible ‐an illusive dream. Most would say 60% work and 40% life; at best, it’s a 50‐50. What are your numbers?

For too long we have separated the two, both at odds with the other.  It is no wonder that the result is stress, confusion and even insanity.

Our biggest mistake is viewing life with the concept of Chronos (sequential) time. 8 hours at work leaves us 8 hours of personal time. Truth is that we have much less personal time after you take away commute, interruptions, the grind of duty and the list goes on.

Life cannot be viewed in two dimensions. It is much richer and the sooner we realise that, we will capture more enriching moments in our lives that may not be urgent but are certainly more important. The result: Less regrets. Certainly, it is not and must not be a zero-sum game.

The solution is to reframe our understanding of work and life. They are both an integral part of you and should not be separated.

A human being is multi dimensional. Balance is not the answer. Life is a platform for work and vice versa ‐An integrated life is fulfilling, expansive and meaningful when we are awaken to Kairos (Experiential) time.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. How many dimensions do you have in your life – is it just 2?
  2. Is it possible to have a 500% life?
  3. How long can time stretch? We only have 24 hours a day!
  4. What kind of mental paradigms do I need to have a 500% life?

We have the solutions. Its not rocket science but critical mental models that will help us frame our lives in a way that we can have our cake and eat it too! Stay Tuned!
